Starting a new semester with a positive start.

"Its the journey that counts, not the destination"

Starting a new semester with a positive start. A rough ( and personal) comment on how to get back in shape, getting back the drive and determination to make every day of your life count, giving your best in everything you do, putting positive mindsets and minimizing negativity.

Looking back, its been a very rough journey that we have all experienced so far for the past 2 years. But in the end we still reached out destination and we are still alive. It has now come to a stage, where we are in the middle of nowehre, with no end in sight nor a begining to hold on to. We are now suffering a "war of attrition", where we are all drained and have no drive left to continue our remaining leg of the journey to the finishing line.

Expect this journey to be rougher than the last. 6 modules, with the worst schedule arrangement i have ever seen. There might be some lecturers that you hate, or some that you like, or some of you, who like none at all, who even detest the course completely from the very begining. Whatever it is i want to make a plea to please bear with me and the things around you that you hate, and make the journey together and make it through sucessfully and end the semester with a loud bang.

It would not be easy, but please do not be selfish and think if only you you you. We are all together in this, and i want to see each and everyone of you helping out each other and ease the burden of your fellow classmates.

If you are right here, right now, why give up at this very moment? Why even bother making the difficult journey only to give up in the middle? If you are keen in making it through, then make the first steps correctly.

Of lecturers and lessons.. There is only one favour i want to ask from you: Respect them and the lesson. You might hate them with all your heart and soul, but please repect them nevertheless. The last thing i want, is to see them storming out of the room or lecture theater, and seeing this, our class is to be blame for. So far we have a fairly good reputation, a reputation, that i do not want to see it tarnished.

Im not saying that we should be like robots and follow to the very core thier instructions and what not, but just give them a sensible amount of respect so that we can end the lesson without any hitches. Also, any assignments given, please do them promptly. They are already giving me and you enough trouble as to chase you to the very ends of this world. So why create that trouble for yourself? Just do it.

Why am i raising these issues? It is simply because these issues have cropped up, and i dont want to see them go out of hand.

Remember, it is the journey that counts, not the destination. If you are unwilling to reach the destination ( not suceeding for instance), dont even bother pulling your peers around you down as well. Hell, dont even bother making the journey in the first place. We are all in this together, not you only, but us, as a class, as a team, as a group, as a friend.

There are soo many ways where negativity can stop you, from whatever you are trying to do, but who is brooding over those negative thoughts? You. You are stopping youself. So reflect on that, and start thinking of ways where you can make the journey smoother.

HLA and MHC. Transplantation, cytokine, host immune response and strategies of pathogens to evade host immune system, immunoassays and diagnostic kits

In short: Tham's cell tech + Chiminology

CL2201: Molecular Genetics

(Takes deep breath...) Topics include: Transformation, transfection and transduction ; pioneering studies on bacterial genetics, use of mutants; positive and negative gene regulation;mechanisms of gene regulation at the level of transcription; chromatin structure;mutation, DNA damage and repair; gene cloning, vectors (plasmids, cosmids, yeast artificial chromosomes), gene libraries and gene sequencing, mechanisms of genetic recombination; DNA methylation; RNA processing;mRNA localization and protein synthesis and degradation. Methods used to study gene expression: Gene chop, DNA microarray, bead technology. Gene therapy.

In short: MBT + Chiminology

CL2202: Bioinformatics

This module covers the basic of bioinformatics. It introduces the students to the various computer programmes available for text based seaches on PubMed, sequence analysis of DNA and protein, phylogenetics and molecular modelling, as well as the application of bioinformatics on drug design, finding homologoes and comparative genomics.

In short: Computers + basic yahoo/google search techniques + chim language

CL2203: Protein Language

This module introduces students to techniques for protein purification, the methods of studying protein interaction with itself and other molecules as well as industrial uses of immobilised enzymes and protein engineering.

CL2204: Bioprocess technology

Prepares students with the scientific principles and technical skills in support of bio-reaction and downstream processing in research and industrial settings.

CL2206: Medical Microbiology

In regards to lecture notes..

Regarding Lecture notes....

As you may all know, lectures notes are available on the 2nd of november, so please, get them as early as possible and dont wait till the last minute to get it. "out of stock" and "not yet printed" excuses are inevitable, but please dont wait till the very last moment to get your copy. Prioritise, not procrastinate....

Bioprocess Technology Practical

Bioprocess Technology Practical

Dear mentors of 2nd year classes,
Please let your students know that CL2204 Bioprocess Tech Practicals start on Week 2.
Especially for group 1 and group 6, their practical's on MONDAY 8 AM!!! Hence, they don't need to come so early on their first day of school.
The first week tutorials are ON and practical briefing will be done during the first week's tutorial session.
For helping to relay the message to your students. THANKS!

In other words, our class's practical on Bioprocess technology is right after Introduction to Immunology. Therefore, the first week of the practical on Bioprocess on monday is called off. And if you notice there is a tutorial at 3pm to 4pm. Ill ask if the tutorial is a face to face or E tutorial. And if it is face to face, ill try to rearrange at an earlier time, so we can end the day early.

If that is impossible, then we shall we have to rot our azz off.... kkthxbye

- SCL(LS) student server upgraded from Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003.
- SCL(LS) student exchange email server upgraded from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003.

All staff, pls be reminded that
- SCL Student Intranet URL is http://sclistud.nyp.edu.sg
- SCL Student Exchange URL is http://sclstud.scl.nyp.edu.sg/exchange

Mentors,
Pls be informed that with the student server upgrade, all students account and mailbox had been recreated.
As a result, all student login account password/student exchange mailbox password had been reset to "passw0rd".
The Student exchange mailbox password is tied to their Windows Login account password.
Students can change their password using the computers in Q303/Q304.
Pls help to inform all student about this.

Once again, sorry for all the inconvienience caused.
Thank you all for your patience.

So to say, we can now access our school email at home!! Use the second url (the one ending with /exchange and use the default password.
